1099-K

Formula reviewed by Tahir Asif, CMA

The IRS form a payment processor or marketplace sends to report gross payments, required above $20,000 and 200 transactions.

Form 1099-K reports the gross amount of payments received through a marketplace or payment processor, before fees, refunds and shipping costs. The reporting threshold is more than $20,000 in payments and more than 200 transactions in a year. A seller can owe tax without receiving a form.

The gross figure is not profit. Marketplace fees, the cost of the goods and shipping are business expenses that reduce the taxable amount on Schedule C.
