Time to Fill
Formula reviewed by Tahir Asif, CMA
The number of days between opening a requisition and the accepted start of a new hire, during which the seat is empty.
Time to fill counts the days a role stays vacant. It matters because an empty seat has a cost: work that is not done, overtime or contractors to cover it, and delays to projects and customers. The cost of a vacancy is the days empty times the daily loaded cost of the role times the share of the work that goes uncovered.
It is related to, but different from, time to hire, which measures how long a chosen candidate takes to move from first contact to acceptance.
